যারা Sophos vs SonicWall খোঁজেন, তারা সাধারণত শুধু feature matrix চান না। এর পেছনে বাস্তব ক্রয় সিদ্ধান্ত থাকে: headquarters-এ কোন firewall, branch-এ কোনটা, কোন platform team ভালোভাবে চালাতে পারবে, এবং কোন product পরে অতিরিক্ত বোঝা হয়ে উঠবে না।

আমি এই লেখাটি নিজের practical অভিজ্ঞতা থেকে লিখছি। আমি বহু firewall নিয়ে কাজ করেছি এবং কোনো vendor-এর অন্ধ fan নই। এখনো আমি Sophos-এর দিকে একটু বেশি ঝুঁকি, কারণ Sophos Firewall-এর daily logic আমার ভালো লাগে: rules পড়া সহজ, Sophos Central কাজে লাগে, Web Protection ও WAF box-এ ব্যবহারযোগ্য, আর SFOS v22 Secure by Design দিকটি শক্ত করেছে।

তবে Sophos-এর সমস্যা আমি দেখি। Daily admin experience-এর development খুব ধীর। Bulk editing, NAT cloning, object cleanup, shadow rule detection, ভালো diffs ও change history firewall বা Sophos Central-এ থাকা উচিত। কিন্তু অনেক workflow বাইরে Sophos Firewall Config Studio -এর মতো tool-এ যাচ্ছে। Tool ভালো, কিন্তু core কাজের জন্য এটি দরকার হওয়া প্রশ্ন তৈরি করে।

SonicWall-এর pain আলাদা। RFDPI, RTDMI, Capture ATP, NSM ও Cloud Secure Edge-এর real technical value আছে। কিন্তু ২০২৪ ও ২০২৫ সালে SSL VPN activity, CVE-2024-40766 এবং MySonicWall cloud backup incident SonicWall-এর trust pressure বাড়িয়েছে। সব vendor-এর CVE থাকে। Edge device-এ আসল প্রশ্ন হলো risk operation-এ কেমন লাগে।

ছোট verdict: Sophos না SonicWall?

Sophos Firewall ২০২৬ সালে অনেক SMB, mid-market ও Security Engineer team-এর জন্য সহজে defend করা যায়, যদি usability, Sophos Central, Web Protection, integrated WAF, automatic hotfixes, Xstream Protection, NDR Essentials এবং readable policy model গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়। Sophos perfect নয়। UI ও Central development ধীর। তবে অনেক real environment-এ operating model বেশি coherent লাগে।

SonicWall এখনো serious choice, যদি বড় existing SonicWall base থাকে, team NSM জানে, Cloud Secure Edge ZTNA/SSE direction হিসেবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়, অথবা Capture ATP ও RTDMI-কে বেশি weight দেওয়া হয়। কিন্তু ২০২৬ সালে নতুন SonicWall কিনলে patch, SSL VPN ও cloud backup context risk assessment-এ রাখতে হবে।

আমি এই তুলনা কীভাবে দেখি

Fair Sophos Firewall vs SonicWall comparison feature checklist-এ থামতে পারে না। Sophos battlecard context হিসেবে useful, কিন্তু neutral truth নয়।

আমি দেখি rule change কত দ্রুত side effect ছাড়া করা যায়, NAT/VPN/TLS issue কত সহজে ধরা যায়, edge risk patching কত mature, logs SIEM-এর আগে কতটা দেখায়, API automation-এর জন্য কতটা usable, HA upgrade-এ কেমন আচরণ করে, এবং rule growth-এর বছর পর platform কেমন লাগে।

• Architecture: Sophos uses Xstream, FastPath, hardened kernel ও modular control plane; SonicWall uses RFDPI, Capture ATP ও RTDMI।
• Rules/NAT: Sophos বেশি readable; SonicWall classic ও granular।
• VPN/ZTNA: Sophos Central/Endpoint-এর সাথে ভালো; SonicWall CSE দেয়, কিন্তু SSL VPN risk context বেশি heavy।
• SD-WAN: দুটিই অনেক branch scenario-তে যথেষ্ট, কিন্তু real pilot দরকার।
• Web/App Control: Endpoint ও Firewall একসাথে থাকলে Sophos শক্তিশালী।
• IPS/TLS: sizing real policies দিয়ে করতে হবে।

Security architecture: Xstream বনাম RFDPI ও RTDMI

Sophos XGS-কে Xstream Architecture, FastPath ও Xstream Flow Processor দিয়ে position করে। Initial evaluation-এর পর trusted traffic FastPath-এ যেতে পারে। XGS appliance-এ NPU থাকে; virtual বা cloud deployment-এ এই hardware advantage নেই।

SFOS v22 hardened Linux 6.6+ kernel, process isolation, IPS-এর মতো services-এর containerization, new control plane, Firewall Health Check, Remote Integrity Monitoring ও Sophos XDR Linux Sensor যোগ করেছে। Firewall নিজেও attack target, তাই এটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

SonicWall RFDPI ব্যবহার করে: full file reassembly ছাড়া stream inspection। Capture ATP ও RTDMI cloud sandbox ও memory inspection যোগ করে। Gateway detection-এ এটি real strength।

Security advisories ও trust

Firewall edge-এ থাকে, তাই incidents নিয়ে আগে কথা বলা দরকার। CVE-2024-40766 SonicWall-এর বড় case। NVD ও CISA এটিকে critical SonicOS Improper Access Control Vulnerability হিসেবে দেখে; CISA ৯ সেপ্টেম্বর ২০২৪ KEV-তে যোগ করে।

দ্বিতীয় বিষয় MySonicWall Cloud Backup File Incident। Mandiant investigation-এর পরে SonicWall নিশ্চিত করে যে cloud backup ব্যবহারকারী customers-এর configuration backups-এ unauthorized access হয়েছিল। Credentials encrypted হলেও configuration topology, services, accounts ও VPN structure দেখায়।

Sophos-এরও ইতিহাস আছে। Pacific Rim report China-based actors দ্বারা Sophos firewalls-এ দীর্ঘ attack বর্ণনা করে। ২০২৪ সালের শেষে CVE-2024-12727, CVE-2024-12728 ও CVE-2024-12729 advisories আসে। তবে automatic hotfix pipeline Sophos-এর operational advantage।

Firewall rules ও NAT

Rules daily work। Sophos-এ source, destination, service, user, zone, Web Policy, IPS, App Control ও logging পড়া সহজ। SFOS v18 থেকে NAT আলাদা।

SonicWall বেশি traditional: Access Rules, NAT Policies, objects, zones ও services। SonicOS team-এর জন্য logical; নতুন team-এর learning curve আছে।

Sophos-এর বড় criticism এখানে: বড় rule sets-এ GUI যথেষ্ট নয়। Bulk changes, NAT cloning, object analysis, duplicates, conflicts ও diffs native হওয়া উচিত। Config Studio V2 সাহায্য করে, কিন্তু product UX-এর replacement নয়।

VPN, ZTNA ও Remote Access

Sophos Sophos Connect, IPsec, SSL VPN ও Central-এর মাধ্যমে ZTNA দেয়। SFOS v22 MR1 macOS-এর জন্য Sophos Connect 2.0 SSL VPN support যোগ করে এবং legacy remote access IPsec সরায়।

Sophos ZTNA ভালো fit, যদি Central, Endpoint ও Firewall আগে থেকেই থাকে। SonicWall historically IPsec/SSL VPN-এ strong, কিন্তু SSL VPN এখন serious hardening topic। Cloud Secure Edge SonicWall-এর modern ZTNA/SSE path।

SD-WAN ও site connectivity

Sophos SD-WAN routes, gateway monitoring, performance-based selection, Central VPN orchestration ও simple branches-এর জন্য SD-RED দেয়।

SonicWall SonicOS SD-WAN, NSM orchestration ও CSE integration দেয়। পার্থক্য feature checkbox-এর চেয়ে operating model-এ বেশি।

Web Protection ও Application Control

Sophos Web Protection categories, policies, exceptions, user context, reporting, DNS Protection ও Endpoint সহ Synchronized App Control-এ শক্তিশালী।

SonicWall suite অনুযায়ী Content Filtering, App Control ও DNS Security দেয়। এটি solid classic approach।

IPS ও TLS Inspection

TLS inspection checkbox নয়। Certificates, exceptions, QUIC/HTTP/3, performance tests ও real applications দরকার।

Sophos Xstream TLS/DPI, XGS FastPath ও TLS 1.3 একত্র করে। SonicWall RFDPI, DPI-SSL, Capture ATP ও RTDMI একত্র করে। দুটিই real policies দিয়ে test করতে হবে।

WAF ও Reverse Proxy

Sophos-এর advantage clear। Web Server Protection integrated এবং internal services reverse proxy দিয়ে publish করতে পারে। SonicWall-এর equivalent on-box reverse-proxy WAF নেই।

E-Mail Security

Sophos Firewall-এ MTA mode, transparent mode, SPX ও per-domain routing সহ Email Protection আছে। তবু আজ আমি Sophos Firewall e-mail module পরিষ্কারভাবে recommend করি না। খুব ছোট legacy environment-এ কাজে লাগতে পারে, কিন্তু strategic purchase reason নয়। Innovation Sophos Email ও Sophos Email Plus in Central-এ। আমি এখানে লিখেছি: Sophos Email Plus: value না upsell? .

SonicWall e-mail-কে hosted/on-prem products-এ আলাদা রাখে। ২০২৬ সালে e-mail security firewall brand নয়, mail strategy দিয়ে decide করব।

Central Management

Sophos Central ছোট ও medium teams-এর জন্য সহজ, কিন্তু complex policy governance, global objects ও বড় change workflows-এ limited। SonicWall NSM fleet-এর জন্য শক্তিশালী: templates, audit, reporting, hierarchy ও zero-touch, তবে discipline দরকার।

Logging ও Reporting

Sophos on-box logging/reporting daily troubleshooting-এ useful; Central license অনুযায়ী 7/30/365 days retention দেয়। SonicWall NSM Reporting/Analytics ও Capture Threat Assessment দেয়। Mature security operations-এ দুটির logs SIEM বা data lake-এ যাওয়া উচিত।

API ও Automation

Sophos এখনো XML API-heavy। Objects, hosts, services, backups ও reports-এর জন্য practical। Config Studio API/curl output তৈরি করতে পারে।

SonicOS REST/API দেয় এবং 7.3.2 API/non-GUI sessions-এর জন্য bearer-token validation যোগ করে। Real IaC-এর জন্য দুটিকেই carefully evaluate করব।

Performance ও Sizing

Datasheet throughput দিয়ে কেনা উচিত নয়। IPS, Web Protection, TLS inspection, App Control, sandboxing, logging, VPN, SD-WAN ও real users-এর mix গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

Sophos XGS hardware-এ Xstream/NPU advantage দেয়; virtual-এ নয়। SonicWall RFDPI ও multicore দেয়, কিন্তু ছোট models carefully size করতে হবে।

HA ও Stability

Sophos HA attractive, কিন্তু সব traffic একইভাবে failover করে না। VPN, UDP, ICMP, proxy ও AV-scanned sessions-এর নিজস্ব limits আছে।

Sophos v18 থেকে generally operable, কিন্তু recent releases HA, logging, interfaces, VPN ও UI bugs এনেছে। আমি লিখেছি Sophos Firewall: CVE নয়, কিন্তু bugs ।

SonicWall HA robust হতে পারে, কিন্তু firmware path, versions ও NSM dependencies plan করতে হয়।

Licensing ও TCO

Sophos explain করা সহজ। Xstream Protection-এ Network Protection, Web Protection, Zero-Day Protection, Central Orchestration, DNS Protection, Active Threat Response ও NDR Essentials থাকে।

SonicWall APSS-এর মতো tiered suites ব্যবহার করে। Real TCO quote, retention, ZTNA, e-mail, WAF ও operational effort-এর উপর নির্ভর করে।

Daily Usability

Sophos first impression-এ জেতে: rules readable, functions expected জায়গায়। Rule set বড় হলে search, bulk edit, diffs, object maintenance, NAT ও change history উন্নত হওয়া দরকার।

SonicWall বেশি technical। SonicOS জানা team দ্রুত কাজ করতে পারে। NSM central visibility দেয়, কিন্তু Sophos Central-এর মতো lightweight নয়।

Development speed ও Roadmap

Sophos strategic direction-এ ঠিক আছে: SFOS v22, Secure by Design, Health Check, XDR Linux Sensor, NDR Essentials, Active Threat Response, audit logs, sFlow ও Config Studio V2।

কিন্তু daily admin ergonomics খুব ধীর। SonicWall CSE, NSM, SonicOS 7.3.2 ও SonicOS 8 এগোচ্ছে, কিন্তু trust rebuild করতে হবে।

কখন আমি Sophos বেছে নেব

ছোট বা medium team firewall চালালে, Central strategic হলে, Endpoint/MDR/XDR থাকলে, Web Protection/WAF/reporting দ্রুত দরকার হলে, SD-RED relevant হলে এবং automatic hotfixes গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলে আমি Sophos বেছে নেব।

কখন আমি SonicWall বেছে নেব

বড় existing SonicWall base থাকলে, team SonicOS/NSM জানলে, fleet management গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলে, CSE strategic হলে এবং Capture ATP/RTDMI high priority হলে আমি SonicWall বেছে নেব। তবে “install and forget” নয়।

Sophos কি SonicWall alternative?

হ্যাঁ। Sophos ২০২৬ সালে serious SonicWall alternative, বিশেষ করে SMB ও mid-market-এর জন্য। SSL VPN risk, cloud backup trust, portal fragmentation বা পুরনো rules থেকে বেরোতে চাইলে Sophos Firewall natural candidate।

আমি দুটিকে কীভাবে test করব

আমি “bad Tuesday” test করব: Web Protection/TLS সহ internet rule, server-to-server, DNAT, hairpin, অন্য vendor-এ IPsec, remote access, ZTNA ও exceptions। তারপর ভুল NAT, broken certificate, IPS false positive, VPN phase-2 mismatch, blocked SaaS, wrong route ও WAF issue দেব।

উপসংহার: Sophos এখন আমার choice, কিন্তু criticism সহ

Winner বলতে হলে বেশিরভাগ classic environments-এর জন্য Sophos Firewall। Sophos সবকিছু ভাল করে বলে নয়, SonicWall খারাপ বলে নয়, বরং Sophos ২০২৬ সালে বেশি coherent operating model দেয়: readable rules, ভালো Web Protection, integrated WAF, Central, automatic hotfixes, Xstream Protection, NDR Essentials ও শক্তিশালী Secure by Design story।

তবে Sophos সাবধান হোক। আমি এখনো Team Sophos, কিন্তু আগের মতো patient নই। Config Studio V2 useful, কিন্তু UI ও Central slow রাখার excuse নয়। SonicWall existing environments ও mature NSM teams-এর জন্য valid, কিন্তু trust rebuild করতে হবে।
